Project Overview
Campaign visuals empowering citizens to protect public education. A concerned citizen and advocate for the local school district approached me with a project to rally community support for public schools in West Bonner County. The district was facing challenges from extreme viewpoints, and the goal was to create a unifying message that celebrated the strength and commitment of the community.

The client shared snapshots of orange-painted rocks created by another community member. These rocks, adorned with illustrations of children, hearts, and uplifting messages like "Hope," "Definitely Believe," and "Never Give Up," symbolized the community’s dedication to its schools. Inspired by this grassroots effort, I set out to create a design that would honor their creativity while amplifying the message: We Support Public Schools, West Bonner County Rocks.
Design Goals
  • Community Emphasis: Highlight the importance of community involvement, support, and togetherness in public education.
  • Typography: Use strong, bold fonts paired with a personal script font to reflect the strength of the community and the individuality of its members.
  • Colors: Feature the primary school color (orange) prominently, complemented by blues and whites to evoke trust, energy, and warmth.
  • Imagery: Incorporate textures and elements that symbolize unity, creativity, and unwavering support.
  • impact
The final design successfully captured the spirit of the community and its commitment to public education. By incorporating the essence of the hand-painted rocks—created by a passionate community member—the design resonated deeply with the audience. The client was thrilled with the results, and the design for use across various platforms to rally support for the school district. The bold, energetic visuals and meaningful symbolism reinforced the message that West Bonner County truly "rocks."

    Design Process

The design process began with understanding the client’s vision and the community’s values. I developed a creative strategy, starting with a moodboard to establish the visual direction. From there, I refined typography, colors, and imagery to create a cohesive design. The final deliverables included logo files, print-ready materials, and digital assets, all tailored to amplify the message of community support for public schools.

    Creative Direction

To begin the project, I listened carefully to the client’s vision and goals. While the initial request was open-ended, I identified key themes: a strong sense of community, support for public schools, and a connection to the hand-painted rocks created by a local advocate. With these elements in mind, I developed a strategy to create a design that was bold, authentic, and deeply rooted in the community’s values. I started by creating a moodboard to establish the visual direction. This included:
    • Bold Typography: To convey strength and dynamism.
    • Vibrant Colors: Featuring the school’s primary color (orange) alongside complementary blues and whites to evoke energy, trust, and warmth.
    • Organic Textures: Inspired by the hand-painted rocks, which symbolized the community’s creativity and commitment.
The moodboard served as a foundation for the design, ensuring that every element—from typography to color to imagery—aligned with the client’s goals and the community’s spirit.

    Logo Design

The logo features bold text reading “West Bonner County” in Sports World, with “Rocks” in Vervelle script. A row of orange rocks sits beneath, with the tagline “We Support Our Schools” in the same script font.

    Symbolism

The bold typography represents the dynamic and active nature of the community. The script font complements the organic, hand-painted nature of the rocks, symbolizing authenticity and personal commitment. The rocks themselves, inspired by the community-created art, represent the strength of the community. Each rock, with its unique illustrations and messages like “Hope,” “Definitely Believe,” and “Never Give Up,” symbolizes the individual contributions that fuel the collective support for public schools.

    Typography & Color Selection

Typography and color are foundational design elements that communicate tone, emotion, and meaning. For this project, I carefully selected fonts and colors to reflect the community’s energy, authenticity, and commitment to public education.

    Typography

    • Primary Font: Sports World
Bold, dynamic, and reminiscent of classic sports logos, this font immediately grabs attention and conveys strength, energy, and vibrant community spirit.
    • Secondary Font: Vervelle
A script font with a handwritten feel, Vervelle adds authenticity and a personal touch, reflecting the warmth and approachability of the community.
    • Supporting Font: Lato
Lato provides a clean and modern counterpoint to the more stylized primary and secondary typefaces. Its neutral appearance ensures excellent readability for any accompanying text, allowing the headline fonts to shine.
This font combination creates a visually appealing and harmonious design that effectively communicates the message of community support for public schools. The bold “Sports World” commands attention, the elegant “Vervelle” adds personality and warmth, and “Lato” ensures clarity and legibility for supporting text.

    Color Palette

The color palette was carefully chosen to reflect the spirit of the community and its connection to the school district. Each color has a specific role in the design, contributing to its visual impact and emotional resonance.
    • Bonner Blaze (#fa6212):
This vibrant orange is a school color, immediately establishing a strong connection to the district. Orange is associated with energy, enthusiasm, and creativity, perfectly reflecting the spirit of the community and its support for the schools.
    • Scholar’s Ink (#1f3061) & Lake View Blue (#1172ba):
The combination of these blues creates a sense of depth and stability. Blue is often associated with trust, reliability, and learning, making it an appropriate choice for a design that celebrates public education. The darker “Scholar’s Ink” provides a strong foundation for the vibrant orange and white elements, while “Lake View Blue” adds a refreshing and approachable tone, making the logo visually striking and balanced.

    Bringing the Logo to Life

To bring the design to life, I created mockups showcasing its application across a variety of mediums, ensuring versatility and maximum impact for community engagement:
    • Apparel: T-shirts and sweatshirts to promote school pride and unity.
    • Print: 5x7 folded cards and 4x6 postcards for sharing the message in a tangible, personal way.
    • Digital: Social media posts and animated GIFs to amplify the campaign online and engage a broader audience.
I presented these mockups to the client in a comprehensive presentation that walked through the entire design process, from initial concepts to final decisions. The presentation highlighted the rationale behind each design choice and demonstrated how the designs could be strategically utilized to foster community engagement and support for public schools. This approach not only showcased the final product but also provided the client with a clear roadmap for implementing the designs effectively.
